If you happen to like Nick Arnold’s humour, you will sure like Tsveta Belcheva’s book ‘The Body Talks’.

The book tells the story of a boy, called Michael through the funny conversations of his own organs. It helps children learn in an easy way how different organs are called and how is our body functioning. The stories are easy to read and make kids (and even grown-ups) laugh. The book itself is designed as the textbook in Biology of a boy who likes sketching while in class.

заглавна страница на книгата "Тялото говори"

After each chapter there is a section, called: ‘Do you know that…?’. It contains brief encyclopaedic facts or explanations, that are considered relevant. There are also some jokes in between chapters.

The book is very well received both from kids and teachers. Because of its interactive nature, it’s often used by teacher as a basis on which to organise a class of mixed nature, inviting teachers on Biology, Literature, First Aid technicians and even doctors. Different quizzes are organised, as well as body part puzzles that are to be solved by the kids.

In 2018 the book was awarder the ‘Magic Pearl Award’ given by the children of Bulgaria (Detskiknigi Foundation).

Below you can find brief summary of each chapter, as well as full versions of two of the chapters. Please have in mind that the text below offers a literal translation of the Bulgarian version. As English is rich in idioms containing words as ‘Ears’, ‘Noise’, ‘Mouth’, ‘Thumbs’, ‘Guts’, etc. a professional translation and further adaptation of the text are strongly recommendable, as to give kids better experience.

Introduction

The books starts with a brief introduction as to introduce the kids the subject and to invite them to take the journey into Michael’s body. They are warned about the existence of ‘scary’ words like: blood, liver, heart, etc., and that it will take them to an adventure inside the human body. It all starts through the mouth, where kids must beware of the 32 hammers (the teeth) that fall down and smash with a power of 58 kg per square centimetre on their victims. Then kids should pass through the tunnel called throat where they will be introduced the two guards — Ping and Pong — the tonsils. Then the cardio-vascular system is explained where the blood, or the sticky liquid is constantly being transferred thanks to arteries, veins and capillaries. The importance of the heart and its functions is briefly explained. Then the Brain is described as a huge computer connected to millions of other computers, each one of which is responsible for different things as our thoughts, feelings, memories, sensors, etc. through the power of its wires (the neurones).

The conclusion at the end of the chapter is that the brain never stops developing, so people are capable of learning new things every day and keep becoming smarter and smarter. Kids are explained that even their grannies can learn to bike at the age of 80 instead of only watching TV.

I am the boss, explains Brain to the body organs, and we should all work as a Team!

I chapter

It all started here…

(First breath or Lungs are attacked by O2)

Of course it all starts when the baby is ready to be born, still in the mother womb. The brain gathers the organs to present them to each other and to explain them who’s the boss. Most of the body systems are described briefly. The brain explains them that they all have one goal — that is to cry loudly if the body needs food or care.

When the baby is born, lungs breath deeply and mouth vocal cords start to cry loudly so the doctor urges to give it to its mother. That is the first signal that the body/baby reaches its first goal.

Years go by and one day the baby becomes a boy who goes to school.

II chapter

THE IMPATIENT BLADDER

(Hard time in school)

In brief:

Michael (Mike in short) was running late to school, so he rushed there. He got really thirsty and drank a lot of water. During the lecture he wants to go to the toilet, but he is ashamed to ask the teacher.

Kidneys are upset. Someone has ordered the body to drink tones of water and they want to know who’s responsible.

The whole text of chapter II is attached below:

‘Hey, you, up there, who ordered to drink such a huge quantity of liquid?’ Kidneys yelled angrily.

‘Well, it was me,’ timidly answered Mouth. ‘I’m all dried up.’

‘Look now, everything has to have limits. Let’s make it clear: we look like beans, do you know what that means? We are not some huge machines. Poor blood, it has turned to pure water. We are going to be drown for no cause.’

‘I totally agree with them,’ intervened Bladder. ‘Someone is messing me up with the reservoir of a truck. Moreover, there are at least 15 minutes left until the end of the class. Do you think I dispose of a cap?

‘Girls and boys, please, let’s all come down. Let’s think of something else,’ empathically offered Brain.

‘I-i-if only we can — the Bladders couldn’t stand it more.

‘We should. Let’s think of a desert, drought…’

‘Drought, drought, …., well, maybe I could water a little, ah?’ the Bladder was up to run over.

‘Well then, let’s think of something scary. It’s going to distract us,’ the Big one was speaking in a calming way.

‘What could be scary? To wet our pants? I can’t imagine something scarier than that.’

‘Well, if you’re so smart, tell us how to solve the situation than,’ Brain filled up with blood.

‘We are to blame,’ tried to take up the responsibility the Pores. ‘It was such a run to get on time to school that we sweated a lot. We got in time by a hair’s breadth you know. The other day Miss wrote us a warning for being late to school and afterwards we had to explain that at home…’

‘Yeah, that is absolutely true,’ confirmed Mouth and the rest were nodding in agreement. ‘That was exactly what I just said. I got thirsty because of us running. Would it be better to dehydrate and to get sick during class. What if the teacher asked us to read our homework in front of the class?’

‘Oooh, no, I am the one who’s sick. I’m sick of your non-stop excuses: ‘by a hair’, ‘by a nose’…’ Hearing that the mentioned body parts stepped back in the corner, and you should bear in mind that hair had already been liked glued on head from all the sweating. ‘God knows what nonsense will your sick brain produce next time? If you’re so clever, why don’t you tell me something: how we are supposed to reach the blackboard squeezing both legs? On our head?’ couldn’t stop foaming the Bladder.

‘Please, let be reasonable,’ Brain stepped again into the role of a mediator. ‘At the end we are a team — we got stuck in the swamp together, and together we’ll get out.’

‘And now we are talking of swamps… This is the end. I can’t staaaaaand it nooooo mooooore…’

‘Come on, clench your teeth for a minute!’

‘Here we are, here we are!’ proudly started to jump the habitants of Mouth, who, as usual, was standing aside of the conversation.

Right that moment the rescue bell finally rang.

‘It was time. Get out of my waaaaay!’

And Mike ran rapidly out of the classroom…

Section DID YOU KNOW THAT…?

Here you have an example what this section looks like:

Approximately 85% of our brain consists of water.

When dehydrated people can fill dizzy and to have a headache.

No matter how insignificantly small it looks MOUTH is actually extremely important to us, because:

  • WE SMILE WITH IT
    • smile makes us look nice
    • laugh makes us healthier
  • WE TALK
    • this way we communicate
      • and have friends
  • WE EAT
    • usually it is nice and yummy, that means we please ourselves
  • ENSURE THE BODY SUBSTANCES, MINERALS AND SALTS, NECESSARY TO:
    • make all body organs to functions and to
    • To grow; – to think; to talk; -to move
  • AND ALL OF THE ABOVE MEANS THAT WE ARE ALIVE

III chapter

I EAT

(WHAT IS THE VELOCITY OF FALLING OF THE FOOD WHEN GOING DOWN THE OESOPHAGUS OR OTHERWISE SAID, IS THERE SUCH THING AS ‘STOMACH GRAVITY (POWER OF ATTRACTION)’

We are publishing the full version of III chapter as for the reader to get more awareness of the book.

The noise coming from the mouth cavity after welcoming the next salty stick was getting unsupportable:

‘Hey, teeth, you are making hell of a noise,’ warned them Brain. ‘I can’t think because of you!’

‘Come on! Why don’t you cover your ears then?’ they grinned and their sworn brother THE TONGUE merely showed up.

‘Did somebody just call us?’ asked Ears as they were waking up of a deep noise.

‘See, ears muffled of that crunching of yours,’ wouldn’t give up BRAIN.

‘And how is that we are always the one who bother you? How the non-stop dub-dup of HEART is never bothering you? At least we don’t make noise all the time.’

‘Don’t mess with HEART, he’s my friend. If he stops, we can all kiss our loved ones goodbye.’

‘Can we kiss Daisy too?’ was curious to know HEART. ‘Or Emma?’

‘I’m HUUUUNGRY. I’m EEEEEEEMPTY!’ the bubbling echo of STOMACH came from below.

‘See, BRAIN? Quickly signal for HUNGER, cause you know what kind of mournful songs sing INTESTINES when not having what to do.’

‘How annoying! Food is all they make me think about.’

‘Hey, what’s that smell?’ spoke NOSE right that moment. ‘LASAGNE…’

‘Our favourite!’ without a second late said STOMACH.

‘Not fatties again! Didn’t I tell that fats are not good to us!’ indignated LIVER.

‘Run foot to the kitchen!’ ordered BRAIN, neglecting what was just said above. ‘Be careful HANDS, the tray is hot!’

‘Pain, pain!’ gossiped the little nerves, cause Ears were distracted again and didn’t hear the warning.

‘What is going on here? Why nobody hears me? Am I not the boss?’ BRAIN got angry for HANDS had burned themselves. ‘Quick, to the sink. Cold water!’

‘Ufff,’ moaned HANDS and SKIN was gone totally red.

‘I’m hungry! I’m empty!’ continued chanting STOMACH, without feeling any pity to HANDS.

‘What a shame! He thinks but for himself!’ other organs shouted indignantly.

‘On the table, on the table,’ the whole down size of the inpatient Minho’s body informed the rest.

‘Please, pay attention this time. Let’s not be burned again’ ordered BRAIN.

‘Mmmm, looks very well cooked,’ admired EYES.

‘And what a smell,’ added dreamingly NOSE.

‘And how delicious it is,’ smacked TONGUE.

‘Bubble-bubble.’ couldn’t say anything else Stomach, cause the OESOPHAGUS had just served him the yummy bite with breaking speed and finally was busy.

‘It’s so nice when everything works in sync,’ finally calmed down Brain and got prepared for the usual afternoon nap.
